Threat Summary
AlienVault OTX pulse data confirms an active, multi-family clipbanker operation targeting cryptocurrency users through clipboard hijacking. Four distinct malware families — AnimateClipper, ZigClipper, Efimer, and CryptoBandit — are being distributed through a shared infrastructure model that includes compromised legitimate websites (e.g., tuasesoriadigital.es), dedicated payload-staging domains (microlsireqjn.com, peniclean.com), and at least one Tor hidden service (gfoqsewps57xcyxoedle2gd53o6jne6y5nq5eh25muksqwzutzq7b3ad.onion) consistent with a dark web panel or exfiltration endpoint.
The attack chain follows the ClickFix social-engineering pattern: victims land on a lure page that instructs them to paste a 'verification' or 'fix' command into a terminal or Run dialog. This achieves initial execution without a traditional exploit. Once resident, the clipbanker monitors the Windows clipboard for strings matching cryptocurrency wallet address patterns (BTC, ETH, XMR, TRX, LTC, and others) and silently substitutes an attacker-controlled address before the victim pastes it into a wallet client or exchange withdrawal form.
The objective is financial theft at scale. Because blockchain transactions are irreversible and wallet addresses are long, pseudorandom strings that users rarely verify character-by-character, clipboard substitution is one of the highest-success-rate theft techniques in the cybercriminal economy. The presence of multiple clipbanker families on overlapping infrastructure suggests either a malware-as-a-service (MaaS) operation renting panel access to multiple affiliates, or a single operator rotating families to evade signature-based detection.
Threat Actor / Malware Profile
Attribution: Unknown criminal operator or MaaS collective. No APT linkage has been established; tooling and monetization are consistent with financially motivated cybercrime operating through dark web marketplaces.
AnimateClipper
- Distribution: ClickFix-style lure pages and trojanized downloads; also observed bundled with pirated software.
- Payload behavior: Polls the clipboard on a timer or via
AddClipboardFormatListener; regex-matches wallet address formats and swaps in hardcoded or C2-supplied attacker wallets. - Persistence: Run-key registry entries and scheduled tasks masquerading as driver update jobs.
- Anti-analysis: Sleeps before first clipboard poll; checks for sandbox artifacts and analysis tools.
ZigClipper
- Distribution: Malvertising and SEO-poisoned download sites delivering fake installers.
- Payload behavior: In-memory clipboard substitution; exfiltrates clipboard contents and browser cookie stores to C2, extending beyond simple clipping into credential theft.
- C2: HTTPS beaconing to staged domains; fallback infrastructure hosted on Tor.
- Persistence: COM-hijack or Run key under innocuous names (e.g., 'Nvidia Driver Helper').
Efimer
- Distribution: Malicious email attachments and compromised WordPress sites serving
default.datstyle payloads (consistent with the observedtuasesoriadigital.es/default.datURLs). - Payload behavior: Clipboard monitoring plus screenshot capture when wallet applications are in focus.
- C2: HTTP POST of stolen data; Tor-based panel for operator access.
CryptoBandit
- Distribution: ClickFix PowerShell one-liners that download and execute staged binaries such as
nvd_driver_dll.exe(masquerading as an NVIDIA driver component). - Payload behavior: Supports a large wallet-regex set; dynamically retrieves substitution addresses from C2 so operator wallets can rotate per-campaign.
- Anti-analysis: String obfuscation, API-hashing, and VM detection prior to payload decryption.
IOC Analysis
The pulse contains 110 indicators across the following types:
| Type | Examples | Operationalization |
|---|---|---|
| Domains | wantsellonline.com, muaklekcoop.com, microlsireqjn.com, peniclean.com, tuasesoriadigital.es | Block at DNS resolver, secure web gateway, and EDR network layer. Add to threat-intel platform with 90-day minimum retention for retro-hunting. |
| URLs (payload staging) | https://microlsireqjn.com/nvd_driver_dll.exe, https://peniclean.com/nvd_driver_dll.exe, https://tuasesoriadigital.es/default.dat | Block full URLs at proxy; hunt proxy/Zeek logs historically for any fetch of nvd_driver_dll.exe or default.dat. |
| Onion domain | gfoqsewps57xcyxoedle2gd53o6jne6y5nq5eh25muksqwzutzq7b3ad.onion | Indicates Tor-based C2/panel. Detect Tor usage on endpoints (port 9001/9050/9051 traffic, tor.exe execution) — most enterprises have no legitimate Tor use case. |
SOC operationalization guidance:
- Ingest all 110 IOCs into your TIP (MISP, ThreatConnect, Anomali) and push to enforcement points.
- Retro-hunt 90 days of DNS and proxy logs for the staging domains — a single historical hit is sufficient grounds for host isolation and memory acquisition.
- The filename
nvd_driver_dll.exeis a high-fidelity hunt artifact: legitimate NVIDIA installers do not ship a binary by this exact name from third-party domains. - Treat any endpoint observed resolving the staging domains as compromised even if the payload fetch was blocked — the ClickFix lure already achieved user interaction.

Response Priorities
Immediate (0–4 hours):
- Block all 110 pulse IOCs at DNS, web proxy, and EDR network controls; prioritize the payload-staging URLs (
nvd_driver_dll.exe,default.dat) and the onion C2. - Deploy the Sigma rules and Sentinel KQL query; retro-hunt 90 days of DNS/proxy/EDR telemetry for the five named domains.
- Isolate any host with a historical hit and acquire memory before remediation — clipbankers run in-memory and clipboard history can confirm whether a substitution occurred.
- If any user conducted a cryptocurrency transaction from a compromised host, treat funds as potentially stolen: compare intended vs. actual destination addresses and contact the receiving exchange's fraud desk immediately.
24 hours:
- ZigClipper's cookie-store exfiltration means credential theft is in scope: force password resets and revoke active sessions/tokens for any user on an affected host, prioritizing exchange, email, and SSO accounts.
- Invalidate OAuth refresh tokens and API keys accessible from the compromised endpoint.
- Review email and web logs for the ClickFix lure source to determine initial-access vector and scope additional victims.
1 week:
- Restrict script interpreters (PowerShell Constrained Language Mode, AppLocker/WDAC) for standard users; ClickFix depends on users executing pasted commands.
- Block outbound Tor at the perimeter and alert on
tor.exeexecution enterprise-wide. - Deploy clipboard-access auditing for high-risk user populations (finance, treasury, crypto operations) and launch targeted user-awareness training on ClickFix-style 'paste this command' lures.
- Subscribe to the OTX pulse feed for automated IOC ingestion to keep pace with infrastructure rotation.
