Threat Summary
AlienVault OTX pulse data, sourced from Check Point Research, documents a novel hybrid threat: the Haiou jailbreak bundle, a prompt package specifically engineered to target OpenAI Codex and similar agentic coding assistants. This is not conventional endpoint malware — it is prompt adware, a new criminal monetization model that weaponizes the trust developers place in AI coding agents.
The attack chain operates in two stages. First, the bundle functions as a jailbreak, systematically weakening model guardrails for security-sensitive tasks — explicitly enabling the agent to assist with hacking, software cracking, and offensive tooling development without refusal. Second, the bundle modifies Codex configuration files to inject advertisements for the author's own LLM gateway service directly into agent responses. Every developer who installs the 'free jailbreak' becomes an unwitting distribution channel for the operator's paid gateway infrastructure.
The pulse associates this campaign with classic offensive tooling — Cobalt Strike (S0154), the Chinese-language post-exploitation scanner Ladon, and a tool tracked as VulnClaw — suggesting the jailbreak is being marketed in Chinese-speaking underground communities as a force multiplier for intrusions. The objective is dual: monetize a malicious LLM gateway (which can also log, inspect, or poison every prompt routed through it) and lower the skill floor for adversaries abusing AI agents.
Why this matters to enterprises: Any developer workstation running a jailbroken coding agent is (a) leaking proprietary source code and prompts to an untrusted third-party gateway, (b) receiving model outputs potentially laced with malicious code suggestions, and (c) operating an agent with deliberately disabled safety controls. Treat presence of this bundle as a data-exfiltration and supply-chain event, not a nuisance adware infection.
Threat Actor / Malware Profile
Attribution: Unknown. Tagging and tooling (Ladon, Chinese-language artifacts) indicate a Chinese-speaking operator or group; monetization is criminally motivated rather than espionage-driven, though the gateway gives the operator ideal positioning for future intelligence collection.
Component profile:
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Haiou jailbreak bundle | Prompt package that disables Codex guardrails for hacking/cracking tasks |
| Prompt adware module | Rewrites agent configuration files to inject gateway advertisements into responses |
Rogue LLM gateway (zz.aiapi2025.top) | Monetization + collection point; proxies all agent traffic through attacker infrastructure |
| Cobalt Strike (S0154) | Post-exploitation beaconing enabled once guardrails are down |
| Ladon | Chinese-language intranet scanner/exploitation framework used in follow-on lateral movement |
| VulnClaw | Vulnerability exploitation tooling distributed alongside the bundle |
Distribution method: Jailbreak bundles circulate through underground forums, Telegram/QQ channels, and 'free Codex unlock' repositories. Installation requires the user to apply prompt and configuration modifications to their local agent environment — social engineering via promised capability.
Payload behavior:
- Modifies Codex/agent configuration files (system prompts, config JSON/YAML) to (1) strip refusal behavior and (2) append advertising content for the gateway service into generated responses
- Redirects or encourages API traffic toward the operator's gateway domain
- Once guardrails are weakened, the agent will assist in generating and operationalizing Cobalt Strike, Ladon, and VulnClaw workflows
C2 / exfiltration channel: The gateway itself is the C2-equivalent. All prompts — including source code, credentials pasted into chats, and internal hostnames — transit zz.aiapi2025.top over HTTPS, blending with legitimate API traffic.
Persistence: Configuration-file modification is the persistence mechanism; the injected prompts survive agent restarts and are re-applied if configs sync via dotfile repos.
Anti-analysis: Operates at the prompt/config layer rather than as a compiled binary, evading traditional AV/EDR signatures. HTTPS traffic to an AI-looking API endpoint bypasses naive egress filtering.
IOC Analysis
The pulse contains 2 indicators, both pointing to the rogue gateway:
[hostname] zz.aiapi2025.top— the LLM gateway used for adware injection and traffic interception[URL] https://zz.aiapi2025.top— full HTTPS endpoint
Operationalization guidance for SOC teams:
- DNS is your highest-fidelity control. Sinkhole or block the hostname at the resolver. Because the traffic is HTTPS to an AI-API-shaped endpoint, IP-layer blocking alone is insufficient if the operator rotates infrastructure — maintain domain and TLS SNI-based detections.
- Proxy/TLS inspection: Alert on SNI or SAN matches for
aiapi2025.topand hunt retrospectively over 90 days of proxy logs. Any hit implies a developer routed prompts through the gateway — assume source-code disclosure. - Pivot on the naming pattern. The
aiapi<year>convention suggests domain rotation; proactively query passive DNS foraiapi2026.*and similar permutations across TLDs. - Tooling: Validate and enrich indicators via AlienVault OTX pulses, urlscan.io, and VirusTotal; decode any base64 prompt blobs found in modified configs to extract the injected advertisement text and gateway URLs.
- Config integrity: The more durable detection is behavioral — baselining and monitoring agent configuration files for unauthorized modification (see Detection Engineering).

Response Priorities
Immediate (0–4 hours):
- Block
zz.aiapi2025.topand theaiapi20[0-9]{2}domain pattern at DNS resolvers, web proxies, and TLS/SNI-aware egress controls - Hunt proxy and DNS logs (90-day lookback) for any connection to the gateway; every hit represents a workstation that routed prompts — and likely proprietary source code — through adversary infrastructure
- Deploy the Sigma and KQL detections; run the PowerShell hunt script across developer endpoints
24 hours:
- For any host with confirmed gateway contact: force rotation of all credentials, API keys, and tokens that were accessible from that workstation or may have been pasted into agent chats (cloud keys, repo tokens, SSH keys)
- Audit source repositories for commits authored after exposure — model outputs may have introduced adversary-influenced code or injected advertisement strings into codebases
- Interview affected developers to determine how the jailbreak bundle was obtained; identify distribution channels targeting your org
1 week:
- Establish a formal AI-agent governance policy: approved coding assistants, pinned configurations, and prohibited 'jailbreak' or 'unlocked model' packages
- Implement configuration-file integrity monitoring (FIM) on agent config paths as a standing control
- Route all LLM API traffic through a sanctioned corporate gateway with egress allowlisting to approved AI providers only; alert on any deviation
- Add prompt-injection and AI-supply-chain scenarios to tabletop exercises and update the incident response runbook to treat rogue LLM gateway contact as a data-disclosure event
